Tasmanian Aboriginal Leader, on the Voice to Parliament

Arguments to vote for and against the Voice that are circulating the nation need to be identified more closely.

Is the Yes vote progressive or not? Is the No vote progressive, racial, or conservative?

Michael Mansell is a Tasmanian Aboriginal Leader who is voting no based on merit and is encouraging others to be more aware of the real reasons people are against it.

His vote is a No vote based on merit – meaning he is for change in the Australian Government concerning Indigenous people, but that the Voice is not the best model to empower First Nations people.

Mansell is advocating for research around better alternatives. He believes the Voice is a proposal to marginalise his community rather than to uplift them.

He also believes that the underlying model of The Voice is assimilation – delaying the sovereignty of First Nations people by giving them the power to ‘advise’ but not wholly ‘change’.

In advising the younger generation of Australia, Michael urged young voters to be wary of racial and conservative influences who are shutting the Voice down because they want no change.

Instead, he encourages young people to investigate ‘real’ opinions that question the structure of The Voice rather than change for Indigenous people as a whole.
