Larrika Leader, on The Voice to Parliament

The goal of the Voice to Parliament is, in essence, to nationally recognise and drive change for First Nations people within Australia. However, many Indigenous people believe it instead is dividing our nation further.

Amongst the overwhelming conversations, many Australians are seemingly lost on what to vote for due to the divided opinions within our nation and the Indigenous community itself.

While any political movement sparks debate, the varying opinions from both Yes and No campaigns have been reported by the media in an overwhelming and agenda-setting tone.

This has caused many Australians to assume mistrust in Australian media companies reporting on The Voice and further push a divide.

Darwin Indigenous Leader of Larrakia, Helen Secretary, believes that The Voice to Parliament is dividing our nation further.

She also pointed out to ABC News that ‘we have our own Indigenous senators and backbenchers in Parliament that are supposed to be our voice now’.

[‘We have our own voice, not people representing us in parliament that have no idea what our dreams are, creating economic development to better our communities, for our people, for our kids’.]

Rather than a Voice, like many others, Helen is fighting for a treaty for her Larrakia nation to secure sovereignty and reconciliation from the Government.

In voting No for The Voice to Parliament,  the Secretary hopes to secure this future for her people in protecting their culture from being bound with the Australian constitution without real power.
