Here is a quick guide on what the voting process is and how the day will run.


Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on October 14, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will set up thousands of polling stations across the country. Similar to a federal election, you may vote at any polling station within your state/ territory. If you are outside your home state, the AEC will designate interstate voting centres.




You can submit an early vote before October 14 if you:

  • are outside the electorate where you are enrolled to vote
  • are more than eight kilometres from a polling centre
  • are travelling
  • are unable to leave your workplace to vote on voting day
  • are seriously ill or in labour
  • are a patient in a hospital
  • have religious beliefs that prevent you from attending a polling place
  • are in prison serving a sentence of less than three years or otherwise detained
  • are a silent elector
  • have a reasonable fear for your safety or well-being.

Early voting will begin on October 2nd for the following states/territories:

  • Northern Territory
  • Tasmania
  • Victoria
  • Western Australia

Early voting will begin October 3rd for the following states/territories.

  • Australian Capital Territory
  • New South Wales
  • Queensland
  • South Australia
